Early
Years (continued)
Undoubtedly,
both the father and mother did their very best to
encourage education of the children, but disunity
through uncontrolled sibling rivalry developed unhealthy,
aggressive behavior which has resulted in unfortunate,
lasting divisions to the present day.
Winning
Commonwealth scholarships at ages 15 years to continue
to matriculation and again at 17 to go to University,
Garry enhanced the scholarship income and helped
pay his own way through University by working at
the Australian Post Office during the holidays. In
the final year of high school he won the 1966 Scarborough
High School Art prize for a painting of his "Aussie" rules
football hero, Barry Cable.
Through
the playing of sports such as basketball, some "Aussie"
rules football but mainly swimming he was able to improve
the state of his asthma from the age of 12 onwards but
was to remain a chronic asthmatic for the first 50 years
of his life.
Research
into natural therapies, practice of meditation and
advances in Western medicine has now made the condition
manageable.
